GBlist: Windows Workshop at EEBA 11/5: Snapshot

Friends,

A final update on the "Windows" workshop scheduled for Wednesday, November 5
at the EEBA conference in Denver.

We have assembled a pretty good group of "experts" to talk about a variety of
issues related to window, door and skylight performance. We have also
collected some fun "show and tell" to hammer home some old problems and some
new solutions. And then there are the "horror stories".... we're still
collecting photos and stories to share, so if you have some great horror
stories of your own, send them - bring them - share them!!!! Last but not
least, we are going to talk about the future.... new glazing and frame
technologies, future building code issues and other "futuristic" issues.

The agenda is as follows: (minor modifications allowed) {handouts in
brackets}

"Windows: Forget What You Think You Know." By R. Christopher Mathis, Mathis
Consulting Company. This presentation will focus on de-bunking old
"rules-of-thumb" regarding windows and energy performance. New framing,
glazing and spacer materials will be discussed. "Don’t trust your eyes" and
other "new rules" will be discussed. New tools to help determine the
appropriate energy efficiency expectations and ways to ensure "getting what
you pay for" will also be addressed. How to read the variety of product
labels. {Residential Windows Book, NFRC Directory, Sample energy labels,
Sample specification language.}

"Windows: Prioritizing Performance Attributes." By John Carmody, University
of Minnesota. This presentation will give builders immediate tools with
which to prioritize and select product energy performance. Based on the
recent book "Residential Windows: A Guide to New Technology and Energy
Performance", attendees will be given a series of new, climate specific-fact
sheets to help in selecting the appropriate windows for their projects.
 {Window Selection Fact Sheets}

"Regulations: What Does the Code Language REALLY mean." By Garrett Stone,
Brickfield, Burchette and Ritts PC. This presentation will provide the
audience with the latest updates on energy codes as they relate to window
performance. Window language in the Model Energy Code and ASHRAE 90.1 and
90.2 will be reviewed. Federal and several state codes will also be
presented. How these codes may impact your new and retrofit construction
decisions will be discussed. Real world code compliance examples and
solutions will be presented {State code map, MECcheck Computer Program}

"Window Horror Stories: More than Just a Scary Movie." Chris will lead an
interactive discussion. He has (unfortunately) collected a number of real
world "horror stories" he will share. The audience is invited to bring their
own collection of window-related horror stories for what is sure to be a
lively, interactive discussion. Slides (not for the faint of heart).

"The Future of Windows: From Low to High Tech." By Dariush Arasteh, Staff
Scientist, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. One of the nation’s
leading windows researchers will tease the audience with some of the
technological innovations the future may bring. Several examples of some of
the "just-around-the-corner" technologies will be on display. This should be
an exciting glimpse into the future of window technology, energy efficiency
and product attributes.  {Show and tell materials and samples}

"Installation Matters: Where the Rubber Meets the Road." By Steve Easley.
 Even the most energy efficient windows can be a real "dog" if not installed
properly. However, we never REALLY know what the conditions of the
installation will be, especially in replacement jobs. Real world
installation headaches will be presented and practical solutions will be
shown.  {Slides, Installation checklist and guide}

Additional Notes:

Audience participation is essential. Discussion/Q&A will occur throughout
the day. Real world products will be available for touching and examining.

Thanks for all your input to date. Keep those horror stories coming in.
 Hope to see you all in Denver!
