  • Dissertation: The Future of News In a Webbed World
(Under the direction of Dr. Debashis Aikat.)
  • Abstract: The increasing popularity of the World Wide Web has created uncertainty about the future of traditional media. The Web’s ability to disseminate multimedia information around the globe makes it a prime candidate as a news dissemination tool. Users can receive timely information quickly and efficiently in a format that they desire. Will people adopt this network of computers and its protocols as a source of news?
  • This thesis examines the viability of the World Wide Web as a source of news. It compares research into the earlier attempts at electronic news publishing, the Videotex, and the functionality provided by the Web. It also examines the social, political, and economic obstacles that must be overcome for the Web to gain widespread use for news. These trends, combined with the latest technologies available on the Web, indicate that the Web is a viable candidate for the dissemination of news and is likely to become a widely adopted news medium.
