Title: A comparison of software methodologies in the development of a serials control system

Abstract: Within the past twenty years the development and implementation of information systems has become a critical success factor for libraries. For an increasing number of libraries the basic functions of all libraries--cataloging, acquisitions, serials control, circulation and reference--depend on information technology. Unfortunately, library automation remains a difficult and expensive undertaking which frequently fails to deliver systems that meet the basic needs of a library.

In this study two types of systems development methodologies were compared: Rapid Structured Prototyping and Structured Systems Analysis and Design. Each methodology was used to develop a serials control system in two small academic libraries. The research questions in this study sought to determine if the methodology used to develop the system results in significant differences in the following areas: (1) the completeness and accuracy of the system model; (2) the ease of communication between analyst and user; (3) the extent of user participation; and (4) the number of innovations suggested by the users that improved the system being developed.
