Title: Development of librarianship in South Korea, 1945-1992: A historical study

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to explore the development of librarianship in South Korea between 1945 and 1992 through historical analysis using data available in both Korean and English sources. Specifically, this study seeks to: (1) examine the development of librarianship in South Korea, with an emphasis on the interplay of internal and external factors influencing librarianship in the historical context; (2) analyze the development of librarianship within the political, cultural, and socioeconomic context of South Korea; and (3) contribute to understanding the relationship between the development of South Korea and the development of its librarianship.

Following an overview of the historical background, South Korean librarianship under the American Military Government (AMG) is examined, including the emergence of professional organization, library education, library services, professional leadership, and the public perception of librarianship. In discussing the Korean War, the stress is on the chaotic and disorderly situation of librarianship during the conflict. The reconstruction of librarianship is also described, with emphasis on the reorganization and activities of the Korean Library Association (KLA) and the establishment of library education at Yonsei University after the war.

The development of librarianship under the authoritarian rule of President Park is explored, including the passage of the Library Law, the foundation of the Korea Scientific and Technological Information Center (KORSTIC), and the hosting of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) World Wide Seminar, in addition to the proliferation of library education and the mini-library movement. Librarianship in South Korea is finally discussed in relation to newly-introduced information technology in South Korea's high-tech industries.

This study also reveals that these developments in librarianship in South Korea have been the result of a number of interrelated internal and external factors: colonial Japanese librarianship, the dynamic leadership of South Korea's professional library associations, the leadership of individual librarians, the cultural tradition of respect for education, the expansion of library education, South Korea's industrial and economic development policy, legislative support from the authoritarian government, and the strong influence of American library practice and services as well as its assistance in library education.
