The hypothesis here is that with increased experience children will change their typifications from personal towards intersubjective with the thought community of the library in order to effectively communicate and satisfy their information needs in the library milieu. While children experience both developmental changes and social growth during these early years, the move toward intersubjectivity with the library is predicated on the necessity to conform to social dictates in order to communicate. Children's personal typifications may be entertained by their community when they are quite young and under the care of a primary caretaker, however, when they enter a larger social situation, such as school, children are expected to adapt the typifications and behaviors of the larger community. Since these are social pressures, the child's response will be a social response rather than one that is developmentally motivated. |
