Title: Towards a democratically viable conception of publicness: The case of public journalism

Abstract: n this dissertation, I attempt to develop a democratically viable conception of publicness. By the concept of a democratically viable conception of publicness, I understand an account of how the news media should conceive of the public, and of their responsibilities in relation to it, and how the news media, as a matter of practice, can help actively engage the public in democratic processes.

Based on Habermas's theory of the public sphere, and the critiques thereof by feminists communitarians, mass communication theorists, and postmodernists, I develop two ideal-typical models of publicness: "publicness-as-universality" and "publicness-as-particularity." Drawing of central insights from Benhabib's reconsideration of Habermas's discourse ethics, I argue, however, that these two models of publicness need not be seen as mutually exclusive, but may rather more usefully be subsumed in terms of a more fundamental and inclusive conception of "self-other relations."

After having developed a democratically viable conception of publicness, I proceed to discuss some of the most important, unresolved issues of concern to the journalistic movement known as public journalism. Most importantly, I argue that public journalism scholars have failed to rigorously theorize the following three questions: (a) In what capacity should journalists involve citizens in democratic processes? (b) How extensively should journalists involve citizens in democratic processes? and (c) By what mechanisms, as a matter of practice, should journalists involve citizens in democratic processes?
