Title: Modeling the recognition and classification of simple CSCW actions and objects

Abstract: "This study provides information about how people performed recognition and classification tasks in a Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) environment. The goal was to determine if subjects honored simple recognition and classification rules applied in the design of a user model. This model has been applied in the design and implementation of a computer system called M.

In the study, subjects performed various grouping, sorting, and annotation tasks on materials (e.g.. documents, whiteboards, etc.) typically used in CSCW environments. Subjects were partitioned into two groups; the first performed tasks in a real meeting room on real materials, the second group performed tasks in a virtual meeting room on a computer. In these tasks, I examined what contextual, not contentual, cues influenced subjects. In the sorting and grouping tasks, the materials were prepared using non-sensible text to insure that textual semantics would not influence subjects.

The tasks performed by subjects provided results which were sometimes obvious and simple. These results are the very essence of the design theory for the M system's user model. Classifying relationships in a CSCW environment without the use of contextual information relies on the context of simple cues and facts present in a CSCW situation. This is a fundamental property of ""common sense"" reasoning, it requires integrating a few simple facts and rules observed via different lines of reasoning. The M system model is based on a multi-reasoning architecture which applies temporal, spatial, structural, functional, and causal reasoning to recognize and classify CSCW actions and objects.

Results of subject performance showed that four document features were salient in the following order: first functional document components, then both media and font style used to author the document, and then spacing. These results confirmed the applicability of specific rules applied both by subjects and the M system when performing various CSCW recognition and classification tasks.

Results from this study serve future work to extend a plausible theory of a user model representing both (1) the reasoning processes and (2) the a priori knowledge applied by an individual (or system) to recognize and classify actions performed by participants in a CSCW environment."
