Five Northern New England Libraries were studied to determine how the Himmel and Wilson service responses fitted into their planning processes. Service responses are the Public Library Association's suggested services that public libraries should adopt as priorities to serve their communities. Specifically, this study examined how committees selected service responses, which service responses were selected, the extent to which service responses were used and matched other planning documents, and how libraries have met the intent of the service responses. Library planning documents and interviews with the directors and committees were conducted and served as the sources for data collection. Findings include that the completion of the worksheets turned out to be more work than the libraries had anticipated, and that the service responses had to be tailored to fit individual community needs. |
