Title: The effects of problem formulation and process structures on performance and perceptions in a GDSS environment: An experiment

Abstract: "This study examined the effects of explicit problem formulation and process structuring on group performance and perceptions in a computer-based group decision support system (GDSS) environment. Two treatments and a control condition constituted the experimental design. Two types of problem formulation heuristics defined the treatments: the general heuristic (formulation advocacy), and the combined heuristic (formulation advocacy and a methodology). Baseline (control) groups did not formulate problems explicitly. All groups had GDSS support; there were no manual groups.

Fifteen hypotheses were examined: nine performance-related, and six perceptions-related. Two hundred and nine undergraduate subjects, in groups of four or five, participated in the study. Forty-five groups, 15 per cell, were run.

Results indicated that combined heuristic groups scored significantly higher than other groups on the problem formulation measure. Combined heuristic groups also scored highest on the solution measure, but the difference was not significant. Contrary to expectation, individuals in combined heuristic groups were the least positive in their perceptions, while those in the general heuristic groups were the most positive.

The performance results suggest a role for explicit problem formulation in problem-solving, while indicating that the link between formulation and solution may be a complex one. Results on the perceptual variables suggested that the link between group process structuring and task-related perceptions may be curvilinear: increasingly positive up to a point, but turning negative as the process becomes overly restrictive.

From the standpoint of theory, the results clarify the nature of the linkage between problem formulation and solution in a GDSS setting. More generally, the results are germane to issues in computer-mediated communication and cooperative work settings. In practical terms, the results suggest guidelines for the design of group process interventions and computer-based tools to support problem formulation and solution performance"
