Title: The concept of a balanced collection: An analysis of the collection development literature, 1970-1990

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the literature in the English language dealing with the term "balanced collection" during the twenty-year period from 1970 to 1990 and to compile a comprehensive bibliography on the subject.

The concept of a balanced collection is a recurring theme in library literature, and a variety of definitions of a balanced collection was used in the literature of balanced collection. The definition of a balanced collection has evolved from a proportional representation of the "best books" in various classes of literature to the balanced representation of viewpoints represented in the library collection. The definitions of a balanced collection can be categorized six major ways: (1) selection of the "best books," (2) proportional representation of the variety of viewpoints on a given subject, (3) representation of all viewpoints addressed within the collection, (4) weighing the demand of materials against the quality of materials, (5) by format (books, periodicals, AV materials), and (6) by the self-renewing library approach. A comprehensive bibliography to aid further research on the concept of the balanced collection is included at the end of this study in the bibliography, part A.

Recommendations include the following: (1) inclusion of the term "balanced collection" in the professional indexes and glossaries, (2) further research on topics such as national and international information flow and national information policies guaranteeing information access to all peoples, (3) studies of all kinds of libraries to ensure how the libraries keep in touch with the information flow within their collections and within the publishing industry, and (4) the findings of this study indicate the need for further research on the question of how libraries provide choices to their readers to enable them to balance their viewpoints and make informed decisions.
