Title: A case study of a combines public/community college library in serving its mission to a multicultural population on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which the Fort Berthold Reservation Public Library, as a combined public/community college library served its mission to a multicultural population.

Five questions were answered: (1) What were the goals of the Fort Berthold Reservation Public Library as a public library, and to what extent were those goals being achieved? (2) What were the goals of the Fort Berthold Reservation Public Library as a community college library, and to what extent were those goals being achieved? (3) To what extent did the public library program meet established public library standards? (4) To what extent did the community college program meet established community college standards? (5) To what extent were the public and community college library goals compatible or in conflict with other?

The investigator made an on-site visit to the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in April and May 1990. The data used in this study, was gathered by two methods. First, an examination was made of the library science literature on Native American library programs, the latest standards for public and community college libraries, library service to cultural minority groups, and Native American tribal archives. Second, information was collected from field notes, observations and available tribal documents. Interviews were focused but open-ended, rendering them unstructured in that the same questions were not necessarily used in all interviews. The interviews revealed a consensus of opinion regarding the library as an integral community agent in promoting the traditional values, history, and cultural heritage of the people of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation.
