Title: Training of library technical assistants: An analysis of the current status of the programs
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the current status of two-year library technician associate degree training programs in the United States. Thirty-six programs were identified. Official catalogs from these programs and a questionnaire addressed to program directors were analyzed.
The findings of the study included: (a) library technology programs have continuously declined in number since the early 1970s; (b) programs are small and offer traditional courses with a specialization in media. New courses are in the area of computer applications; (c) most programs do not strictly adhere to American Library Association guidelines; (d) library technology courses are not included in general education requirements for students of other disciplines.
It was concluded that library technology programs have not changed significantly since the last major study published in 1985.
