Title: Dimensions of the local students' interactive video-based distance learning experience: A qualitative study

Abstract: The distance learning experience is an integration of multiple physical, behavioral, technical, and cognitive factors. A number of elements can impact an individual's experiences in a distance learning environment. Some of these elements may contribute toward a preconceived attitude toward the distance learning experience as well as influence the outcome of the experience.

The purpose of this study was to examine local students' responses to interactive video-based distance learning technology. Particular attention was given to how interaction among individuals and between the individuals and the technology impacted the distance learning experience.

Qualitative research methodology was used in order to gain a more holistic perspective of the distance learning experience. While the primary method for data collection was participant observation, survey questionnaires and informal, unstructured interviews were also used. Three courses over two academic semesters in a university setting were selected for observation.

Findings from the study revealed the complexity and interactivity of the various elements involved in the distance learning experience. The local students' distance learning experience can best be described in terms of multiple dimensions. The interactivity of these dimensions is constant and dynamic. It is the interplay between and among the various elements of these dimensions that define the local students' experience. The three dimensions identified in this study are (1) the local student's physical setting and interaction events, (2) the local students' attitudes toward the remote students, and (3) the stages of the local students' responses to the distance learning technology. A theoretical model identifies the elements that exist within one local student's distance learning experience. This model may also be used to trace the process of local students' distance learning experiences.
