Abstract: This study examines the career of librarian and educator Patricia B. Knapp (1914-1972), whose lifelong interest in the role of libraries in undergraduate education led her to identify the major principles involved in providing effective instruction in the use of libraries. The study details her early career as a librarian and the events leading up to her implementation of the Monteith College library project, an experiment in integrating library instruction into the undergraduate curriculum of Monteith College at Wayne State University. Her writings concerning the Monteith project set out the basic principles of instruction in the use of academic libraries, providing a foundation for the 1970s library instruction renaissance. Knapp's work had a profound influence on the evolution of modern library instruction. Her main contributions lay in her insistence that the library is a complex tool for organizing human knowledge, and that library competence is ideally taught through a concept-based approach using learning experiences which are carefully planned and sequenced throughout a four-year curriculum. |
