Title: Implementation of emerging technologies in organizational settings: Development and test of the implementation research tool

Abstract: This dissertation seeks to improve the speed and reliability of research on implementation of emerging technologies in organizational settings by developing a theoretically grounded new research tool: the Implementation Research Tool. The Implementation Research Tool builds on an empirical framework of antecedents to success, which relies on an extensive set of definitions and operationalizations from existing quantitative research. It was created using the principle of the hermeneutic circle. The Implementation Research Tool is designed to provide a new viewpoint on implementation of organizational technologies, and was also explored for its ability to integrate separate streams of qualitative and quantitative research on information systems implementation.

To test the Implementation Research Tool, a case study of an emerging technology--Replicated Enterprise Resource Planning systems--was developed and analyzed, leading to a four-stage model of precursors to success when implementing Replicated Enterprise Resource Planning systems. The analysis led to the finding that the Implementation Research Tool has the potential to improve the performance of the information systems implementation research area. Finally, the dissertation outlines a number of potential improvements to the Implementation Research Tool.
