Title: NATIONAL DOCUMENTATION CENTER ABSTRACTING AND INDEXING SERVICES AND THE DIFFUSION OF RESULTS FROM GOVERNMENT-SPONSORED RESEARCH

Abstract: Through the analysis of data for 16,000 recipients
and questionnaire responses from 836 recipients, this study
establishes geographic, industrial, subject discipline, and
related distribution and use patterns for the federally-produced
abstracting and indexing services of Nuclear Science
Abstracts, Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports, Technical Abstract Bulletin and US Government Research & Development
Reports. Although confined primarily to the United
States, the study takes cognizance of the role played by the
abstracting and indexing services within a number of Soviet
bloc countries relying heavily upon such services as basic
media for scientific and technological communication. The
research-oriented. nonrecipient U.S. population is identified
and some of its characteristics determined and compared with
the recipient population. The economic effects of investment
in the "technical progress" economy input variable are considered
and "related to the economic effects of disseminating
scientific and technological information. Recommendations
are made regarding national information dissemination policies
affecting the distribution of the abstracting and indexing
services under study.
