Title: A CODE FOR CATALOGING MATERIALS PUBLISHED IN URDU, PUSHTO AND PANJABI

Abstract: Collections of materials from the Near East and South
Asia have been growing rapidly in libraries of Western
countries, but standard Western cataloging techniques have
in some respects proved inadequate to handle these
materials. The first two chapters of the present study
demonstrates the specific need for guidance in cataloging
publications in three modern literary languages written in
the Arabic alphabet, namely Urdu, pushto and Panjabi, on the
basis of a detailed survey of current practice in libraries
in the United states and abroad. The chief difficulties are
found to be associated With the converting of vernacular
orthography into the Roman alphabet for filing purposes, with
the proper understanding of the composition of personal names
borne by individuals writing in those languages, and with the
constructing of catalog entries for these names. The
writer discusses and analyzes each of these ,difficulties
with a view to providing the cataloger with the information
he needs in order to be able to make appropriate decisions.
The result is a code designed not to replace but to
supplement the rules of the American Library Association.

Following Chaps. I and II, which include a survey of
the languages and the area in which they are spoken and
written, the question of transliteration is dealt with at
length in Chaps. III and IV; Chap. IV in particular presents
tables of transliteration for Urdu, Pushto and PanJabi, with
detailed rules of application and many examples. Chaps. V-VII
deal with names; Chap. VII in particular presents rules
for the construction of headings for personal names
illustrated with a variety of names both of the twentieth
century and earlier. Chap. VIII covers bibliographical
description, and includes rules for features peculiar to
publications in these languages. Chap. IX summarizes the
study as a whole and offers suggestions for future work in
this and related fields. The appendixes contain extensive
lists of authors' names divided into categories based on
structure and meaning. These lists are intended to be of
practical value in a field of cataloging where reference
works are few and information sources in Western languages
hopelessly inadequate. The appendixes are followed by a
