Title: Library managers' communication processes and electronic mail use in the context of an academic library environment

Abstract: The study examines the influence of four classes of independent variables on use of electronic mail by managers in the context of an academic library environment. The theoretical model holds that electronic mail use is determined by: Task/Environment variables; Perceived attributes of electronic mail; Referent group norms; and Demographic characteristics. The study also assesses the purposes of electronic mail usage and managers' perceptions of the impact of electronic mail on their communication patterns and productivity.

A survey questionnaire was used to obtain self-report measures on the extent of electronic mail use, the four classes of independent variables, types of uses, and the perceived impact of electronic mail.

At a descriptive level, managers indicated a variety of uses of electronic mail. The most common uses are information exchange and coordination activities. Regarding the perceived impact, managers have experienced substantial and favorable changes in the use of two competing modes of communication, the telephone and written memoranda. Electronic mail is perceived as positively affecting the quality of communication and information exchange, and efficiency and productivity. However, negative effects, such as "information overload" and the "time consuming" nature of processing of electronic mail were also reported.

Results of factor and multiple regression analyses indicate that electronic mail use is determined by a Task/Environment variable (job variety), Group referent norms (subordinates' favorable attitude towards the medium), and a Demographic variable (organizational tenure). This confirms the multivariate model's assumptions that media behavior is multifaceted and multidimensional in nature.
