Title: A STUDY OF THE OCCUPATIONAL AND SELF CONCEPTS OF LIBRARIANS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Abstract: Purpose. The purpose of this study was to make an assessment of the occupational and self-concepts of a group of librarians, and determine if any personal or professional characteristics influence these perceptions. This study also sought to determine the existence of any relationship between the respondents' social comparisons and their personal and professional perceptions.

Procedure. A questionnaire was mailed to a sample of librarians working in the Los Angeles/Orange county area. The questionnaire contained the Ghiselli Self-Description Inventory, the Thornton scale, and questions concerning social comparisons and personal data of the respondents. A return rate of 63% of usable questionnaires was achieved.

Results. The overall occupational and self-concepts of the respondents were positive, and there was a high correlation between the two perceptions.

The self-concepts of these librarians were not influenced by any personal or professional characteristics. The occupational concepts, however, were influenced by the sex, educational background, position, number of co-workers, consideration of changing professions, supervisory duties, and current occupational choice of the respondents.

There was a limited relationship between the respondents' social comparisons and their occupational and self-concepts. While librarianship was compared unfavorably to non-library occupations, the differences were greater when the comparisons were made by librarians with negative perceptions or when the differences were made along the lines of the status and salary the occupation receives.

When the respondents compared their type of librarianship with the other three librarian groups, the above differences were found not to exist.
