Title: SCHOLARLY REPRINT PUBLISHING IN THE UNITED STATES

Abstract:
The primary objective of this normative survey has been to discover and
report the overall dimensions and the particular characteristics of the
reprint publishing industry in this country. Hardcopy microform republication progras have been included. The najor focus of the study
has been on hardcopy, sreali-edition. facsimile reprinting.
During the 1960's and in the early 1970's reprint publishing underwent a period of tremendous growth, change and turmoil. Reprint publishing has emerged as a significant sector of the publishing industry in terms of the number of publishers involved and the vast quantity and variety of titles they reprint.

The need for the study became increasingly apparent as the sea of scholarly material surging into the nation's libraries became heavily
freighted with scholarly reprints; but reliable. systematicaly reported
information about reprinters and their programS was not readily available.
Almost three-hundred reprint publishers have been identified. The firms
are listed and described in the Directory of Reprint Publishers prepared
as an appendix to the report. Factual data and opinions have been
gathered from the publishers, and from their suppliers and customers, by
personal interviews, nailed quationnaires and documentary analysis.

Several chapters of the report are devoted to tracing the republishing concept from scribal cultures through World War II, when the republication program initiated by the United States Office of the Alien Property Custodian helped to create the modern reprint industry.

A general overview and details about the industy's procedures. programs It problems and relations with libraries are presented. The study's findings will have significant implications for publishers, librarians, printers and booksellers, and for scholars, the ultimate users of new copies of scarce and out-or-print titles produced by the reprint industry.
