Title: Access points perceived as useful in searching for music scores and recordings

Abstract: This qualitative study was undertaken as an initial investigation to identify the access points musicians perceive as useful in searching for music scores and recordings, and to characterize factors in their cultural environment that may affect access to music materials and choice of access points. Based on the results of the investigation, recommendations about the design of useful bibliographic records and retrieval systems are proposed.

Particularly within the domain of music, studies of users' needs are lacking. This study is the first to present evidence, from the musicians' perspective, of the access points they perceive as useful. Information was collected through long interviews with twenty-one academic music faculty. The study population was limited to faculty who were composers, musicologists, music theorists, music educators, and performers (conductors, vocalists, and instrumentalists) from three different academic institutions.

Findings suggest that though musical specialization had some bearing on an individual's involvement in musical activities, other variables; namely, job responsibilities and personal interests, were also influencing factors. Evidence was presented that musicians often sought particular score formats, such as full score and miniature score, and particular editions, such as facsimile edition and historical/scholarly edition. They also preferred particular recording formats, such as compact disc and cassette. Musicians wanted different editions and formats of scores of the same work displayed together in bibliographic retrieval systems to facilitate the selection of scores for teaching, performance, and research. For similar reasons, they wanted recorded performances of the same work listed together.

Access points perceived as most useful (i.e., employed 75% of the time) in searching for scores and recordings included the following: "composer," "title," "performer," "genre," "opus number/thematic number," and "instrumentation." In addition to those that were perceived as most useful, access points not used 75% of the time, but perceived as useful by over two-thirds of the group, included: "edition-facsimile," "format," "edition-historical/scholarly," "publisher," "manuscript," "source of lyric," and "edition-Urtext." An additional twenty-two access points that one-third to two-thirds of the musicians perceived as useful were identified.
