Title: A NEW ALPHAMERIC CODE FOR CHINESE IDEOGRAPHS: ITS EVALUATION AND APPLICATIONS
Abstract: An alphameric coding system for Chinese ideographs is developed from the following assumptions:
1. There are a few basic patterns of Chinese ideographs, and each ideograph must belong to one of the patterns. 2. Each ideograph is composed of one or more components, and each component is composed of one or more graphic elements. 3. There is a finite number of basic graphic elements.
Following seven governing rules of coding, the system can generate unique codes for all past, present , and future ideographs. A statistical experiment was conducted to compare this system with two similar ones. The experimental results show that this system has medium speed and best accuracy among the three systems compared and that, with the provision of redundancy for error correction, this system should be applicable in actual practice. If proper additional training is provided, a coder with little knowledge of the Chinese language should be able to do some descriptive cataloging on certain kinds of Chinese materials by using this coding system.
