Title: THE BABCOCKS: PRINTERS, PUBLISHERS, BOOKSELLERS
Abstract: the major purpose of this study is to determine the nature, extent, and significance of the contributions of three generations of a family (Elisha, John, Sidney, William R. Babcock, and their children) and their various associated to literature for children in America from 1785-1860. The Introduction presents a brief picture of printing and publishing in America and of the printing and publishing of children's books in particular up to and during the first year of Babcock publishing. Part I provides brief biographical lnformation on the Babcocks and describes in detail their printing, publishing, and bookselling activities, mostly in Bartford and New Haven, Connecticut, but also in Springfield, Massachussets,
Lansingburgh and Albany, New York, New Orleans, Louisiana, and in Charleston, South carolina. Part 2 covers Babcock publications for adults, beginning with a rather thorough discussion of Elisha Babckock's newspaper, The American Mercury, and then contiouing with a brief discussion of their other adult works, according to content classification.
Pert 3 and 4 deal with the major focus of this study -. Babcock children's books. In Part 3 these are identified, analyzed and categorized as to the following: (1) content including subject, theme, style of writing and difficulty level: (2) format: Including form (toy, chap, et cetera), size, paging, covers, and illustrations; (3) numbers of titles and editions: related to specific Babcock publisher. timee, place of publication, and singling out original Babcock titles as well as origins of other titles: and, (4) author and Illustrators of Babcock children's books (Noah Webster and Alexander Anderson in particular), with brief biographical information and discussion of their works.
A chronological Checklist of 536 Babcock titles in 1,042 editions. it presented in Part 4, with the followlng information included: (1) bibliographic details, (2) location symbols for extant copies, (3) symbols for copies described in entries, as well as for those examined by the writer, and (4) entry numbers for editions listed in trade and special bibliographies. Checklist entries are preceded by what are designated as Carstens numbers.
Several Appendixes provide the following 1nformation:: (1) chronological charts on the Babcocks and Babcock printing; (2) expenditures and inventories related to Babcock printing, publishing and bookselling; (3) lists of identified Babcock toy books; (4) unique Babcock titles; aDd (5) doubtful Babcock titles
