Title: CLASSROOM ORIENTATION TO THE USE OF THE PUBLIC LIBRARY AND ITS EFFECT ON FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS

Abstract: "This project involved fifth and sixth grade classes in three schools and the Youth Services Department at one community library. An experiment with treatment and control groups was carried out with the public library use of students being measured by observational data gathered at the library. The experiment was based on measuring change from established normal library use and use during the experimental treatment period. Teachers and students were also questioned about student library use.

The treatment consisted of three types of activity. First, the librarian visited the students, introducing library services and presenting book talks on titles of interest to fifth and sixth graders. Secondly, children were given a self-monitoring sheet and told to keep track of when they used the library and how they used it. After the student filled in the monitoring sheet, he/she was instructed to turn it into the teacher. In the third part of the treatment teachers were directed to talk to students at least once during the experimental period about the public library. Teachers also were to encourage individual students to use the library to solve problems.

Analysis of covariance was used to test for significant differences among groups.

Results. In this study teachers did influence student use of the public library. Students in the experimental groups spent more time at the public library and engaged in more activities than students in the control group. In addition a pattern of use of the library by these students emerged. Fifth and sixth graders were very positive about the library when asked about it, but they used it infrequently under normal circumstances. These students viewed the traditional book and reference services of the library as the most useful and they used materials at the library rather than to take them home. When students used the library, they enjoyed meeting friends and socializing while doing homework.

These findings suggest that the teacher can play a role in student use of the public library and that there is a benefit to students when the public library and the school cooperate."
