Title: THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE "ANGLO-AMERICAN CATALOGING RULES" IN ACHIEVING STANDARDIZATION OF CHOICE AND FORM OF HEADING FOR CERTAIN LIBRARY MATERIALS CATALOGED IN CANADA, GREAT BRITAIN AND THE UNITED STATES FROM 1968 THROUGH 1972

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (1967) in achieveing standardization of choice and form of heading in the cataloging of the national library agencies of Canda , great Britain and the united states from 1968 trhough 1972, the first five years of the use of the AACR as an international cataloging code. It was assumed that standard identification of a work for bibliographic purposes is a valid purpose for an interantional catalging code, and that the application of the AACR by the national bibliographic agencies of the three countries is a relaiable use of the code.

The cataloging studied was that of the British National Bibliography, Canadiana, and the Library of Congress. The catalog headings examined were those identical items of library material (almost entirely books) which were cataloged by all three agencies during the period under study. The extent to which these headings were identical or different, the nature of the differences which were identified, and the reasons for these differences were determined from examination of the bibliographic entries, from the materials themselves, from administrative statements of cataloging policy from the three agencies, and from cataloging staff members in the agencies, who were consulted for information on the application of rules and policies to specific items.

Data tabulated include the number and frequency of the AACR rules used in cataloging the items, the variations in headings both within and from the provisions of the AACR, with frequency and reason for occurrence, and tables of rank order in all categories.

Among the findgings of the study are that the AACR was effective in achieving standardization of choice of entry (96.6% of the items studies), but that variations in form occurred in 80.5% of the items. Differences between the british and North American Texts of the AACR and policy decisions by the three agencies to depart from the provision of the code accounted for the majority of the variations. Differences in fullness of author's names and dates were the prevalent types of variation. Other types of variation and the reasons for their occurence are discussed, and areas are noted in which rule changes might be considered.

This study has determined certain data which should contribute to increasing the degree of international standardization in cataloging.
