Very few attempts have been made to apply this body of literature which studies the problems of search to the search for information, and none of these attempts has been very satisfying. An initial case for the application of this theory to the search for information is made by studying basic similarities between the two domains. An extensive review of work in search theory, theoretical and applied, is given, followed by a review of the literature on searching for information. A methodology for studying this proposed application is presented, as follows: a conceptually organized spatial model for information contained in documents is developed, and the body of search theory, specifically referring to search strategy and detection probabilities, is applied to this model. The results of this application are presented and explored. Finally, these findings are evaluated by a series of criteria, and further research, both theoretical and experimental, is suggested. |
