Title: An evaluative case report of the Group Decision Manager: A look at the communication and coordination issues facing online group facilitation

Abstract: The Group Decision Manager (GDM) is a mechanism designed for coordinating the communication and information for problem-solving groups operating asynchronously over the Internet. The GDM incorporates traditional problem-solving techniques in a computer-mediated environment allowing problem-solving groups to collaborate in an asynchronous distributed environment.

To evaluate the GDM, an actual problem-solving group was asked to make use of the GDM in an attempt to solve a real problem. The system combined typical problem-solving techniques with computer-facilitated communication. Examples of typical techniques include the Nominal Group Technique and the Delphi Technique.

Data were collected from user observations, user reports, and the database activity that coordinated the process. The findings of this study indicate that the GDM can effectively coordinate communication and information in an asynchronous environment. Furthermore, success rests heavily on the group facilitator's ability to provide appropriate examples and clear instructions so that all group members understand how they are to work in this environment. The research also identified problems with respect to providing the needed group facilitation, specifically group members' interest level in the problem, time between interactions with the system, and group members' participation levels. These problems were addressed in this study and potential solutions are given, along with suggestions for future research to resolve these problems.
