Title: A General Method for Identifying Relevant Document Sets From A Known Relevant Document
Abstract: This effort attempts to identify sets of documents relevant to any specified disciplinary subject area. The first part of the method proposes an algorithm which identifies potentially relevant documents from a single entry article. The application of this algorithm to a specific interdisciplinary subject area results in the identification of a data base of documents, each of which is related to that specific entry article. The filtering of this data base via "a measure of relatedness" yields a small set of documents which are compared to a control set of subjectively-judged documents derived from a review article on the subject. The algorithm passes through two iterations, and the measure of relatedness is utilized to rank those documents identified at each iteration. The second part of the method attempts to construct search strategies which retrieve those filtered documents from conventional bibliographic resources. The basis for the strategies are those index terms chosen to represent the content of the documents for subsequent inclusion into a conventional bibliographic resource, the National Library of Medicine's r1EDLARS/MEDLINE data base. These terms are generated and ranked according to their frequency of occurrence. A matrix of conditional probabilities for all pairs of index terms is constructed from this ranked distribution. A threshold analysis of this matrix forms the basis for the construction of four MEDLARS/MEDLINE search strategies. The testing of these four strategies results in a recall measure of over fifty percent (50%). The method as described herein pertains to any specified disciplinary subject area which meets the following requirements: 1. the literature under consideration must be problem oriented; 2. the literature must have citation coverage; 3. the literature must be incorporated in some bibliographic resource; 4. that bibliographic resource must be based on index terms.
