Title: AN ANALYSIS OF SELECTED DEMOGRAPHIC AND ATTITUDINAL VARIABLES AND THEIR ROLES IN ADULT EDUCATION PARTICIPATION

Abstract: "The purpose of this research was to assess the potential relationship of certain attitudinal and demographic variables and adult continuing education. The study had two major objectives. One, was to determine if persons who engaged in education beyond the baccalaureate responded differently on selected demographic and attitudinal variables than those who had not continued with further formal education. The other objective was to determine if these variables were related to the primary reasons students cited for their return to school.

Since previous educational background has been viewed as the primary, significant factor affecting educational participation, all of the subjects selected had completed the baccalaureate, but none had earned an advanced degree.

The sample consisted of 9,389 subjects from 46 institutions of higher education who had completed the Alumni Survey from the American College Testing Program (ACT). The analysis used a chi-square statistic, cross-tabulation analysis, and four control conditions.

Contrasting the group of persons who had sought additional education and the group who had not revealed that seven of thirteen variables showed a statistical relationship to continuing education status. These variables were: sex, age, years since college graduation, current occupation, previous area of college study, current annual salary and satisfaction with salary and benefits in present job.

Regarding the primary reason why students had returned for additional education, eleven of the fourteen variables showed a statistical relationship with the primary motive for additional schooling. These were: subject area studied upon return to school, present occupation, degree aspirations, enrollment status, age, sex, length of time since college graduation, current annual salary, satisfaction with challenge of work, satisfaction with career potential, satisfaction with advancement potential, and congruence between previous education and current occupation.

Sex, salary, age, and length of time since college graduation were used as control conditions and each relationship was examined in more detail. For the most part, the general trends observed in the total group were present among the subgroups."
