Title: Intrinsic motivation for learning, out-of-school activities, and achievement

Abstract: "Few studies have examined patterns of intrinsic motivation in people's day to day lives, when they are free to choose from a virtually limitless range of activities. The present study was correlational and examined (1) what activities high school students pursue outside of school, (2) the relationship between out-of-school activities and in-school achievement, and (3) the pattern of motivation associated with out-of-school activities and in-school achievement. Motivation was examined using constructs of intrinsic intellectual motivation, self-efficacy, and goals. Subjects were 159 students in 2 Silicon Valley public high schools. The students were ethnically diverse and largely middle class. All subjects filled out a questionnaire; then 66 were randomly selected and personally interviewed.

The subjects reported few intense interests other than sports. Self-efficacy for instruction from others correlated significantly with grade point average, but self-efficacy for self-instruction did not. Intrinsic intellectual motivation correlated significantly with grade point average and number of out-of-school activities. Students high in intrinsic intellectual motivation had more cognitive goals than other students. Continuing motivation occurred at a low rate and was positively related to intrinsic intellectual motivation and number of out-of-school activities.

The research suggests 4 major conclusions: (1) the out-of-school activities that students pursue are related to their school achievement; (2) motivational attributes of students are related to the out-of-school activities they pursue; (3) motivational attributes of students are related to their school achievement; and (4) the most common category of goals that students name for their out-of-school learning activity are affective (mostly entertainment), but the most common specific goals that they name are social relationship goals--superiority and belongingness."
