Title: An analysis of the dimensions of a Web-delivered problem-based learning environment

Abstract: Instances of web-delivered problem-based learning instructional systems can be found and described on the web. The elements common to web-delivered problem-based learning environments have not, however, been articulated in the literature. The purpose of this interpretive case study was to examine a web-delivered problem-based learning environment for teaching and learning in educational administration by: (1) characterizing users and usage of the learning environment, (2) identifying essential components of the learning environment; (3) identifying users' perceptions of the effectiveness of each component; (4) explaining how the essential components of the learning environment interact to form an effective instructional medium, and (5) determining what can be inferred about the promise of web-delivered problem-based learning environments for teaching in learning in higher education. Interpretive case study design and methods were used to complete two units of analysis: Level One is a single case study of the learning environment; and Level Two is a multiple case study of five faculty users. The findings suggest that delivering problem-based learning using an authentic virtual data set fosters effective, realistic preparation of professionals while promoting the use of information technology in practice and encouraging learners to think about problems and interventions in unique and proactive ways. The findings serve as a roadmap that researchers and educators can use on the journey toward the development of applications of web technologies to further support problem-based learning and improve the efficiency and efficacy of this instructional form in practice across higher education settings.
