Title: Louis Round Wilson at the University of North Carolina, 1901-1932

Abstract: In 1932 the University of Chicago recruited Louis Round Wilson to rescue its floundering Graduate Library School, and he is well known to librarians and educators alike for his contributions as there from 1932 to 1942. Yet before Wilson answered the call to Chicago he had served for more than thirty years as the Librarian at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. During that period the University underwent a transformation from a small state college to one of the most important and prestigious institutions of higher education in the nation. Wilson participated in virtually every aspect of that transformation.

His principal role was administering the development of the library into a major research resource not only on the campus in Chapel Hill, but throughout the South. More important than his role as librarian, however, was his emergence as a central figure in the University's administrative structure. He organized the University's Extension Bureau and served as its director for more than a decade, during which it achieved national prominence. He founded the University Press and served as its Director for ten years. Informally, he was among a very small group of campus administrators who first imagined, and then effected, the metamorphosis of the University.

Beyond the campus he emerged as a major leader in the professional and educational organizations, and as a well-respected advisor to the foundations. In his home state, he was among the founders of the North Carolina Library Association, and served as its president three times. He helped secure the legislation authorizing the North Carolina Library Commission and served as its first director. He became active in the American Library Association, and chaired its Bureau of Education for Librarianship. He was a champion of library service of all types as an important element of public education.

His achievements during his career at North Carolina justified his selection as Dean of the GLS, and alone would have ensured his place in the history of American education.
