Previous research, however, does not indicate whether communication occurs between the research and practice components, or how each is used. This study investigated the formal communication process in nursing. Citation analysis was used to examine 1,446 citing/cited relationships from nursing literature published in 1989 to determine what effects education and institutional affiliation have upon an author's contribution to the formal nursing literature and whether communication occurs between the research and practice components of nursing literature. A citation context analysis was conducted to examine the use of research and practice articles in formal nursing knowledge. The results of the investigation revealed that citations occurred between the research and practice components, although citations are more likely to occur within components. Authors with research degrees and affiliated with education/research institutions tend to publish research articles, whereas authors with clinical or undergraduate degrees and affiliated with health care delivery institutions tend to publish practice articles. The context analysis revealed that research articles cited research articles for methodological information and practice articles cited research articles for conceptual information. No statistically significant differences were found in the types of citations to practice articles. |
