Title: Evaluation of text-based and image-based representations for moving image documents

Abstract: This study evaluated text-based and image-based representations of moving image documents. The representations consisted of titles, keywords, keyframes, and salient still images. The study measured the degree of correspondence between moving image documents and their representations, both text and image based, in a non-retrieval environment with and without task constraints. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) was used to examine the dimensional dispersions of human judgements for the full moving images and their representations. Congruence between judgements for the full moving image documents, and the various representations was used as a measure of the degree of representativeness.

A group of 150 volunteers from the University of North Texas student body served as subjects for the study. As hypothesized, congruence between moving image documents and image-based representations was significant at.001 $<$.01. There was also support for the hypothesis that a specific task forces increased congruence between the moving image document configuration and the text-based representations. The third hypothesis, which theorized that a general task would force increased congruence between image-based representations and moving image documents, was not supported. On the basis of the findings, a model of moving image document representation which incorporates both text-based and image-based representations was developed.
