Title: PERCEIVED MICROCOMPUTER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT NEEDS OF WISCONSIN PUBLIC SCHOOL LIBRARY/MEDIA SPECIALISTS

Abstract: "A major deterrent to the widespread application of computers in education has been the high cost of the associated hardware and communications systems. Recent advances in microcomputer systems technology have made the purchase of computer systems a fiscally responsible move for many school districts; and school districts are purchasing microcomputers nationwide. It has been predicted that sales of microcomputers to schools will continue to increase.

The computer is similar to other media hardware in that training is essential for its effective implementation. Although training has previously been identified as a need, there has been no systematic needs assessment which would form the basis for professional development programs.

A literature review failed to disclose prior research on microcomputer professional development needs. As a result, an instrument was developed and validated to assess the microcomputer professional development needs of library/media specialists. The validation study was conducted in March of 1981.

In April of 1981, the instrument was administered to 1333 Wisconsin public school library/media specialists to determine their perceived need for professional development activities in the implementation of microcomputers in the library/media program and the curriculum. Responses were received from 693 individuals, representing a response rate of 52 percent.

The top identified needs included the preparation of microcomputer based instructional materials both with and without the use of a traditional programming language; determining the compatibility of microcomputer hardware and software; evaluating computer languages; integrating microcomputer programs into the curriculum; and developing selection criteria for instructional programs."
