Title: Directors and deans in concert and conflict: A discursive and typological analysis of small college libraries

Abstract: This study attempts to ascertain, for the occasion of hiring, the existence of the perception of seven types of the good small college library director: Teacher, Change Agent, Professional Librarian, Gregarious Colleague, Library Practitioner, Scholar Librarian, and Library Manager. Types are tested for at various compliance levels using a nineteen-part questionnaire sent to 383 colleges with between 500 and 2000 students. Responses were received from 245 library directors and from 169 deans. Analysis of responses points to agreement and disagreement between library directors and deans and facilitates foreseeing and forestalling conflict. As well as an analysis for the whole population, analyses are completed for competitive small colleges contrasted with non-competitive small colleges and for smaller small colleges contrasted with larger small colleges. Provision is made for aspects of types and for hybrid types. The study includes a short history of typological studies and a discussion of typological method. The embedded analogue of library directorship with business management is examined. Finally, suggestions are advanced for further research bearing on both the subject matter of the paper and the application of typological studies in general to librarianship.
