Title: Characteristics of citations in geoscience doctoral dissertations accepted at United States academic institutions, 1981-1985

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the patterns of citations in United States doctoral dissertations in the field of geoscience during the period 1981 through 1985, and to compare these patterns to those found in previous investigations using different source materials. Five hundred dissertations were chosen at random from the total population of 1,815 dissertations and citations in the reference and bibliography sections were numbered. A sample of approximately 5,000 citations were chosen randomly from the slightly more than 70,000 numbered citations and were coded for 20 characteristics, including date of publication, author, title, subject classification, form of publication, language and place and country of publication.

The citations showed the following characteristics: 59.3% were classified as geology, (Library of Congress classification QE); 79.6% were serials, rather than monographs; 96.6% were written in English; 64.3% were published in the United States; a period of three decades was needed to cover 90% of all citations; and the total number of different serials cited was 836. Citations in this study show a higher percentage of publications in English, lower percentage of publications published in the United States and shorter time period needed to cover 90% of citations than found in previous studies using serials as sources. Citations in dissertations classified as paleontology show a higher percentage of monographs cited and a much longer time period needed to cover 90% of citations than in dissertations classified as geology, geophysics and geochemistry.

The implications of this study are that geoscience libraries need to be larger than most other science libraries in order to give the same level of service because of the high number of serials cited and the long period of time during which publications are useful. For the same reasons collections specializing in paleontology will need even more space than collections with other specialties. Foreign language publications are not very important to geoscience graduate students, with the exception of those specializing in paleontology.
