Title: ACQUISITION OF SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION: A STUDY OF THE PHYSICS DEPARTMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH

Abstract: The linkage model, first developed by Havelock in his study of Planning for Innovations Through Dissemination and utilization of Knowledge, has been applied to a study of the acquisition of scientific information among the members of the Physics Department of the University of Pittsburgh. The model has been found to be valid in the person to person communications among these scientists. However, the model has not been found to be applicable to the library or print media. It is suggested that if the latter media could become more involved in the feedback mechanism implied by the Havelock model then performance in the information world of the physicist would become more vital and useful.

The study also includes a consideration of the use of journals by these physicists. The methodology included library observations, interviews with all members of the faculty, and analysis of journal publications and citations. Usage of journals was found to be similar to that found in earlier studies, with the major journals such as the Physical Review bearing the brunt of the usage, whether measured by citations, publications or specific claims or instances of usage.
