Title: The contribution of the learning resources program to the excellence in community colleges

Abstract: This study examined the community college learning resources program as it currently existed and operated in three exemplary community colleges in 1989-90. Focusing on objectives, organization, administration and staff, budget, user services, collections, and facilities, the study examined how and whether learning resources program or program units within community colleges that were members of the League for Innovation in the Community College contributed to the college, its instructional program, and the perceived excellence of those colleges.

The "Standards for Community, Junior and Technical College Learning Resources Programs" promulgated by the American Library Association provided a framework for analyzing the data. The results are presented in three case studies. Each case study includes a demographic and economic overview of the community and the community college; a discussion of the learning resources program or program components; and an analysis of the program or program components.

Although it was the hypothesis of this study that exemplary community colleges might be expected to have exemplary learning resources programs, the hypothesis did not prove true. None of the programs examined could be considered exemplary.

Moreover, the general profile gleaned from this investigation does not bode particularly well for the continuation of a conceptualization of a programmatic construct of learning resources. At each site, the researcher had first to determine whether or not the college had an integrated learning resources program, and if not, as was the case at all three, what components of the program might still exist and should be included in the study. Comparative findings and conclusions were examined and ideas for future research offered.
