Title: BEHAVIORAL COMPONENTS OF LIBRARY NETWORK DEVELOPMENT

Abstract: The major focus of this study was to measure the correlation between an individual's knowledge of an innovation and the level of his or her resistance to that change. In other words, those with valid information about an innovation are better prepared to accept or adapt to that change. Using resource sharing via networking, the hypothesis stated that librarians without such knowledge of change are more resistant than those who are equipped with such knowledge. Thus, attitude toward networking activities and the concept of sharing resources via networking served as dependent variables and knowledge and attitude toward the work environment were the independent variables. Sex, age, work experience and salary range served as predictor variables.

It was assumed that attitudes serve as precursors of behavior. Therefore, by measuring attitudes toward networking, and librarians' involvement in networking activities, acceptance or adaptation to that innovative library service can be predicted.

A self-developed questionnaire was used to gather data which was analyzed via the SPSS-10 program at the University of Pittsburgh's Computer Center. Although some relationships were found between knowledge and attitudes toward resource sharing, more research is needed to clarify the knowledge/resistance to change correlation. More opportunity for networking was found in the areas of interlibrary loan, cataloging, and bibliographic access, and hence more involvement by librarians with those functions. Opportunity available for a network function has appeared as a potential stimulus for increasing the level of involvement and for changing attitudes in a more favorable direction. In addition, the study found that ownership is preferred to access to needed materials, that resource sharing is beneficial to more than a special group of libraries, that participation in networking does not cause identity loss for libraries, and that libraries are no longer able to survive as independent entities.
