Title: ASSESSMENT OF MEDIA CENTER SERVICES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE PREFERENCES AND PERCEPTIONS OF MEDIA STAFF MEMBERS, PRINCIPALS, AND TEACHERS OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS IN NORTH CAROLINA
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate perceptions of services offered in North Carolina senior high school media centers during school year 1979-1980. It sought to compare the degrees of importance designated for present and desired services by media staff members, principals and teachers. An attempt was made to determine the rationale for the selection of services offered in the schools.
A questionnaire and an interview schedule were developed. The sample for the study consisted of thirty-one media staff members, twenty-one principals, and 161 teachers. The interview schedule was administered to eighteen media specialists.
The study attempted to answer the following questions: (1) Is there a significant difference in the degrees of importance assigned to present services by media staff members, principals, and teachers? (2) Is there a significant difference in the degrees of importance assigned to desired services by media staff members, principles, and teachers? (3) Is the designation of degrees of importance of present services influenced by the respondent's sex, age, number of years in present position, level of preparation and subject area concentration? (4) Is the designation of degrees of importance of desired services influenced by the respondent's sex, age, number of years in present position, level of preparation and subject area concentration? (5) Are there underlying factors which determine the selection of services offered in media centers?
Statistical methods used for analysis of data were the t test at the .05 level, a one-way analysis of variance and the Duncan's Multiple Range Test.
Among the conclusions were: (1) Agreement existed for forty-eight per cent of the statements which were perceived as being on a similar level of importance by each of the three groups. This fact along with the relatively few statements showing significant differences tends to indicate a greater degree of agreement than disagreement among respondents. (2) Sex, age, years in present position, level of preparation, and subject area concentration appears not to have influence on the respondents' designation of degrees of importance for present and desired services. (3) The overriding factor in determining the selection of services to be offered was the availability of funds, both local and federal. The factor of budget was the deciding factor in the selection of services, size of collection, and size of staff and center.
