Title: ORGANIZATIONAL BANKRUPTCY: A SOURCE FOR THE STUDY OF INFORMATION SYSTEM FUNCTIONING

Abstract: The factors that contributed to the bankruptcy of W. T. Grant company are studied to determine the role of information systems and other variables in organizational dysfunction. Data from court records, journalistic accounts and other sources were collected and studied in an attempt to relate information system functioning to the several critical dimensions of organizational operations, namely, management, financial planning, marketing, overall control, credit system, account receivables, inventory control and accounting practices.

Based on these data, several inferences on the possible role of information systems to the dysfunction of the organization are presented. These inferences can provide the basis for hypotheses as to those factors that contribute to organizational breakdown and which can then be traced to either information systems components design or in a more general perspective to the improper use of such systems by management.
