Title: THE INFLUENCES OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC BACKGROUND EDUCATION, AND THE APPRAISAL OF LIBRARIANSHIP IN CHOOSING LIBRARIANSHIP AS A CAREER BY ACADEMIC LIBRARIANS IN THAILAND

Abstract: The main purpose of this study was to determine the factors that influenced university librarians in Thailand to choose academic librarianship as their career and to find out about the satisfaction and dissatisfaction of these librarians regarding their careers. Six research questions were developed to correspond with the major purpose.

The study included 14 government universities in Thailand. The population of this survey consisted of 17 directors of central libraries, 59 heads of departmental libraries and 300 professional librarians. The data collected with the form of questionnaire, survey, interview and review of the literature. Eighty-three percent of mailed questionnaires were returned. The results were analyzed by using the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) to manipulate the percentage, frequencies, means, standard deviation, analysis of covariance and Scheffe procedures.

This study reveals that 91 percent of academic librarians, low rank and salaries is female; 56 percent single, and their age below 30. Only 33 percent of the librarians in holding Master's degree in Library Science. The influential factors that made these librarians choose their career were "the desire to work with books", "the library practicum" and "the previous work". The librarians are satisfied with their interests in their work, job location, co-workers and the competence of administrators but dissatisfied with the salary scale, promotion opportunities, prestige of the profession and status as compared to the faculty status. The high salary librarians are more satisfied in their career than the low rank and salary. There was no difference in satisfaction or dissatisfaction toward their career among the directors, heads of departmental libraries and professional staff.
