Title: SYSTEMS ANALYSIS OF ON-LINE SHARED CATALOGING PROCESS IN FOUR ACADEMIC LIBRARIES

Abstract: Cataloging is a process of production of a catalog, and as a process it is a function of two factors: (1) the concept of what the final product is to be, and what service it is to perform, and (2) the process of production itself, how extensive the process is to be, and what technology is to be applied to produce the final product.

Concept of catalog and cataloging is reviewed starting with Jewett's ideas (1853), through the formatting years of Cutter's Rules (1876) and the emergence of the concept of "main entry" derived from Cutter's Rules and prevailing to date in the LC MARC and in the on-line shared cataloging of the 1980's.

Cataloging process in changing technological environments is surveyed, beginning with a totally manual system of 1876, through the application of LC printed cards after 1901 up to the 1960's, and the application of computer technology in mechanized or automated systems using the peripheral data processing equipment in the 1960's up to the on-line interactive shared cataloging of the 1970's and 1980's.

Systems analysis of on-line shared cataloging performed in four academic libraries is presented in detail, including flowcharts, tabulations and the model.

In conclusion it is stated that the extent of on-line shared cataloging process and the cost of dataloging depend not so much on technology applied, but on the library's policy decisions on standard of cataloging to be maintained on one hand, and content or standard of the on-line data base on the other, quite independently of the size of the library. Implementation of the cataloging process is expressed in alternative procedures performed or eliminated from the workflow. This is translated in alternative inputs of time, labor and money.
