Title: TRANSFORMING WELL STYLED PROGRAMS TO EFFICIENT PROGRAMS

Abstract: This paper describes transformations performed on computer program sources. The transformations are from a given program, the input, to another program, the output. They preserve effect and perform optimizations. The emphasis is to provide facilities for the user to "better" style programs without incurring penalties at execute time which might otherwise be associated with such a style. Two specific areas were investigated. One of these areas dealt with transforming given expressions to expressions that take advantage of properties specific to their representation. Well styled expressions that represent membership are among those that may be improved by these transformations. The other area dealt with transforming executable statements to initializations. Programs might be styled to take advantage of the expressibility of some executable statements. Such programs then could be transformed to reflect, with initializers, those executable statements' effects. Those executable statements would then be eliminated.
