Title: AN EXAMINATION OF UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES WITHIN THE INFORMATION STRUCTURE OF A DEVELOPING REGION: ALAGOAS, PERNAMBUCO, PARAIBA, RIO GRANDE DO NORTE
Abstract: The two basic questions of this research project are: (1) What are the factors which typify the university libraries of the Northeast? (2) To what extent are library collections and university curricula structured in accordance with the socio-economic needs and development goals of the Northeast?
The research was conducted using the survey method and incorporated three data gathering instruments: the questionnaire, the interview, and observation. Questionnaires were orally administered to library directors, faculty members, and students to determine the distinctive characteristics of the region's university libraries and the relevancy of collections and university curricula to the Northeast's socio-economic development objectives. Observations were made of the environmental features of the libraries visited. Published documents and reports were investigated to establish the context in which higher education and academic libraries have developed in the Brazilian environment.
Among the conclusions of this study were that university libraries within the region: (1) seem to lack patterns in their organization; (2) appear to be isolated outside the information flow of their campus communities; (3) have collections which appear to be insufficient quantitatively and were judged as inadequate or poor by the respondents polled; and (4) appear non-functional within the region's infrastructure for the purpose of acquiring, organizing and disseminating materials concerning the Northeast's development objectives. In addition, universities seem to be involved in the developmental process in establishing a variety of activities; however, the undergraduate curricula as they are practiced in classroom environments appear to involve a campus minority in the learning process which directly relates to the region's socio-economic conditions.
Following the conclusions, recommendations were offered. Among them were: (1) librarians must become involved in the development of the instructional content of undergraduate courses; (2) a Northeast Regional Center for Information needs to be organized; and (3) education curricula need to be researched and models developed that would effectively relay information about the Northeast's socio-economic needs to undergraduates.
