Title: DESIGN OF A COMPUTER NETWORK USING A SINE WAVE, LINE-OF-SIGHT, FREQUENCY MODULATION SYSTEM IN THE 30MHZ TO 50 MHZ RANGE
Abstract: Radio communications and the international space in which radio frequencies are deployed holds the promise of vast services and benefit to mankind. Since radio frequencies are able to represent digital data through various means of modulation techniques, computer systems can use radio frequencies exclusively as a means of communications. For most developing countries where extensive telephone infrastructures are non-existent, a radio data network promises a practical compromise.
This study analyzes the design and implementation of a computer network using sine wave propogation of a line of sight frequency modulation system for the transmission of computer data between nodes. Propogation will be in the 30MHz to 50MHz range.
Problems of error in transmission are simulated in terms of transmission S/N ratio for varying types of component and intermodulation disturbances as well as for noise in the channel. Component noise is simulated using SPICE on the VAX/UNIX system while channel noise is simulated in FORTRAN using actual weather data from worldwide weather stations. Randomly generated data are transmitted in coded and uncoded form up to a maximum of 10,000 transmissions per run.
Results indicate that given the proper coding and error recovery techniques, errors in transmission can be reduced to manageable margins.
