Title: ACADEMIC LIBRARY ADMINISTRATION: POWER AS A FACTOR IN HIRING AND PROMOTION WITHIN A FEMINIZED PROFESSION

Abstract: A nationally drawn sample of academic library directors were asked to rate how important they considered various credentials a candidate might present when applying for the position of library director at a similar institution. Five major variables were tested: (1) power in the candidate's current position available to obtain resources and personnel to accomplish goals and objectives; (2) power available within the library profession; (3) power-consolidating behavior; (4) the candidate's background; and (5) characteristics of the candidate's current employer.

The overall results showed that power within the current position was considered the most important variable followed by power within the profession, power-consolidating behavior, the candidate's background, and finally, the candidate's current employer. Although no statistically significant difference occurred in the overall responses when they were partitioned by age, gender, or internal vs. external candidacy, trends suggested that women and internal candidates placed less emphasis on power within the profession than did males and external candidates. When the size of the hiring institution was considered, the results showed that the larger the institution, the more important power within the profession became to the hiring process. In institutions with more than 10,000 students, this variable was the most important consideration.

The study concluded that, through alliances and activities, a person can demonstrate power needed to accomplish goals and objectives, and that this power was a major factor in the hiring of an academic library director. The study further suggested that the importance of power within the profession to hiring increases with the size of the hiring institution. Since women place less value on this variable than do men, this may explain partially why there are fewer women in the top administrative position of academic libraries.
