Title: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE USE OF SOURCES OF MEDICAL INFORMATION BY THE PRACTICING JORDANIAN PHYSICIANS OF SELECTED HOSPITALS IN JORDAN

Abstract: This study investigated the use of information sources by the full-time practicing physicians in four selected hospitals representing the government, military, private and teaching hospitals in Jordan. The main objectives of the study were: (a) to investigate the needs for medical sources and libraries, (b) to identify the medical sources and libraries used by physicians, (c) to determine what methods and sources physicians used to locate needed information, and (d) to determine potential variables that may affect the frequency of use of library and non-library related sources.

A questionnaire was used as the main instrument for collecting data. It was pretested using a sample population of twelve Arab health professionals. Four hundred and ten questionnaires were then distributed to the physicians working in the four selected hospitals. A total of 289 completed questionnaires were returned, resulting in a 70.5 percent response rate.

Various packages of the SPSS were used for the statistical analysis of data. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the t-test were used to test five hypotheses. The level of significance was set at .05. Of the five hypotheses, four of them were supported by the results of the analysis of data and one was rejected.

The major findings of the study are: (1) Physicians who have longer years of experience use non-library related sources of information more frequently than their colleagues who have shorter periods of experience. (2) Internists, surgeons, pediatricians, obstetricians and gynecologists, and radiologists do not differ statistically from one another in their frequency of use of information sources. (3) Specialists use information sources more frequently than do general practitioners. (4) Physicians involved in research use all library related-sources (excluding newspapers) more frequently than their colleagues engaged in clinical practice. (5) Practicing physicians educated in English-speaking countries use libraries and library-related sources more frequently than those educated locally, or in the Arab States or in non-English speaking countries.
