Title: The availability and utilization of microforms in agricultural libraries: A case study of five U.S. sites, with implications for Nigerian agricultural libraries

Abstract: This study investigated the availability and utilization of microforms in the following universities: Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Illinois, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Minnesota. These selected universities have separate agricultural libraries with microforms in their collections.

A critical analysis of the literature indicated that microforms save space, and are less expensive than equivalent hard copies. Microforms have been applied extensively because of their combined values. Some viable microform projects were identified like the OCLC microform project, Latin American Microform Project, Library of Congress Preservation Microfilming program, the cooperation between the land grant university libraries and the National Agricultural microfilm project, the Association of Research Libraries Microform Project, Bioscience Information Services and the Cooperative African Microfilm Project. Most users have expressed negative and apathetic attitudes towards the use of microforms.

A survey technique was used to collect data. Target population comprised the professional heads of the selected agricultural libraries and a proportional stratified random sample of the agricultural scientists in the five universities. Three hypotheses were formulated and four descriptive questions were asked.

The data were analyzed using percentages, means, standard deviations, one-way analysis of variance and Pearson Moment Correlation Coefficients. Major findings were: funds were not allocated for the purchase of microforms; the libraries had no microform specialists; about 70.2% of the argicultural scientists used microforms for research and teaching; many users complained that using microforms bothered their eyes and also their postures were restricted; and lastly, agricultural librarians did not incorporate into their selection policies the acquisitions of microforms.

Implications of the study for Nigerian agricultural libraries are: in order for Nigerian agriculture to progress, agricultural scientists must use all available information media including microforms like their counterparts in the United States; Nigerian agricultural librarians must acquire more microforms; Nigerian agricultural libraries must have microform specialists; heads of agricultural libraries must allocate funds for the purchase of microforms and equipment; and Nigeria should have an agricultural microform project.
